How to Replace your Window Sash

Window Reference Points

The steps below will guide you through removing your current slider window sash and installing your new window sash. The diagram to the left illustrates the parts of the window to help you complete your window sash replacement.

Window sash is the edge around the movable part of your window. Window locks are located near the top and bottom of the window sash.

Unlock Window & Slide Open

From inside, unlock your window and slide it most of the way open, so you can easily grasp the edge of the window sash.

Push Up to Top Track

Holding both sides of the sash, push it up into the top track so the bottom of the sash can be lifted out of the bottom track and swung in toward you.

Pull Out of Top Track

You can now pull the sash out of the top track and remove it from the window.

To put in the new sash, follow the steps in reverse: hold the sides of the sash and push it into the top track, setting the bottom of the sash into the bottom track, and then slide your window closed and lock it.
